FBI notes: Saddam Hussein sought familiar refuge

BAGHDAD – After the 2003 invasion of Iraq, Saddam Hussein stayed in Baghdad until he saw "the city was about to fall." Months later, he was caught hiding at the same farm where he had fled in 1959 after taking part in an attempt to kill the country's prime minister.

Unclassified FBI interviews conducted during his incarceration at a U.S. detention center offered new details Thursday about the late Iraqi dictator's life on the run — both before and after he was ousted.

The documents also confirm previous reports that Saddam falsely allowed the world to believe Iraq had weapons of mass destruction — the main U.S. rationale behind the war — because he feared revealing his weakness to Iran, the hostile neighbor he considered a bigger threat than the U.S.

Saddam was captured by American soldiers on Dec. 13, 2003, just over eight months after his regime was toppled by a U.S.-led invasion. An Iraqi tribunal convicted him of crimes against humanity, and he was hanged at the end of 2006.

He said he was never in the neighborhood on the outskirts of Baghdad that was bombed on March 19, 2003, in an attempt to kill the Iraqi leader at the start of the war. The U.S. military had received a tip that he was hiding there.

Saddam made his last public appearance in Azamiyah on April 9, 2003, the day a bronze statue of him was brought down in a central Baghdad square in what became the defining image of his overthrow.

But, he said, he stayed in Baghdad until April 10 or 11 when "it appeared that the city was about to fall." He held a final meeting with leaders from his inner circle and told them, "We will struggle in secret."

Then he fled the capital, gradually shedding his bodyguards along the way to avoid attracting attention, telling them they had fulfilled their duty.

The new details were among more than 100 pages of notes written by George Piro, an FBI special agent who interviewed Saddam after he was found huddling in a so-called "spider hole" on a farm near his hometown of Tikrit, 80 miles north of Baghdad.

The notes of the FBI interviews were made public Wednesday by the National Security Archive, a non-governmental research institute.

Saddam said the farm was the same place he took refuge after participating four decades ago in a failed assassination attempt against then-Prime Minister Abdul-Karim Qassim.

Saddam denied the widespread belief that he used body doubles to avoid detection. "This is movie magic, not reality," he was quoted as saying in the transcript.

Instead, he said, he evaded enemies by using the telephone just twice in more than a decade and constantly moving from one dwelling to another. He communicated mainly through couriers or met personally with officials.

"He was very aware of the United States' significant technological capabilities," the agent wrote in notes after one interview.

In a series of interviews between February and June of 2004, Saddam also told Piro that he falsely allowed the world to believe Iraq had weapons of mass destruction because he feared revealing his weakness to Iran, which Iraq fought in a ruinous, eight-year war in the 1980s that involved the use of chemical weapons.

Saddam denied having unconventional weapons before the U.S. invasion but refused to allow U.N. inspectors to search his country from 1998 until 2002. The inspectors returned to the weapons hunt in November 2002 but still complained that Iraq was not cooperating.

"By God, if I had such weapons, I would have used them in the fight against the United States," he told Piro.

Former President George W. Bush justified the invasion of Iraq in large part on the assertion that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction and could provide them to terrorists. Saddam had used chemical weapons previously, and the Bush administration maintained that he was pursuing biological and nuclear weapons. No such weapons were found after the war.

In the interviews, Saddam dismissed Osama bin Laden as a "zealot" and said he had never personally met the al-Qaida leader. He said the Iraqi government did not cooperate with the terrorist group against the U.S.

The National Security Archive obtained the FBI summaries through a Freedom of Information Act request and posted them on its Web site. The New York Daily News also wrote about the Hussein files last week after obtaining summaries of the interviews through a FOIA request.

Saddam also stated that the United States used the Sept. 11 terrorist attack as a justification to attack Iraq and said the U.S. had "lost sight of the cause of 9/11." He claimed that he denounced the attack in a series of editorials.

Piro had described the discussions with the Iraqi dictator in an interview with CBS's "60 Minutes" last year. Saddam told him he had "miscalculated" Bush's intentions and expected only a limited U.S. attack.

"Hussein stated Iraq could have absorbed another U.S. strike, for he viewed this as less of a threat than exposing themselves to Iran," according to a June 11, 2004, FBI interview report.

He also provided details about the run-up to the 1991 Gulf War following his invasion of Kuwait, reporting that former U.S. Secretary of State James A. Baker III warned Saddam's then-Foreign Minister Tariq Aziz during a January meeting that if Iraq did not comply with American demands "we'll take you back to the pre-industrial stage."

And he took personal responsibility for ordering the launching of Scud missiles against Israeli targets during the 1991 Gulf War, saying he did it because he blamed Israel and its influence in the United States for all Arab problems.

Craziest Action Alert You May Ever Receive

The work we did around the country and in DC yesterday was powerful and instrumental.  There were over 50,000 of you in DC in less than a week's notice.  The lines outside the Congressional Office Buildings to pass through security were at or near historic levels.

The votes in favor of health care reform are fewer today than they were when we woke up yesterday morning.  We are making a difference. But it still may not be enough yet.

Congressman King and Congresswoman Michele Bachmann called me this afternoon to specifically make a plea to you, the Tea Party Patriots.  The Congressmen are concerned that we hit a crescendo and they want to make sure that our efforts were not in vain.  We all know how much is at stake.

So, here is what these 2 Congressmen are asking Tea Party Patriots who are within driving distance of DC to do:  come back tomorrow, Saturday, November 7 at 1:00 pm.  Yes, I am as exhausted as you.  I just got back to Atlanta and am now going to be back in DC tomorrow. Yes, I wonder why they did not just call this morning so I could stop those of you who were in DC from California, Illinois and other places and you could stay one more night.

Here is the plan and is going to sound crazy.  The plan is for us to literally surround the Capitol and to make a lot of noise doing it.  A LOT OF NOISE.  So, bring your musical instruments, trumpets, boom boxes, snare drums, cymbals, noise makers, bag pipes, boat horns and even your crying babies.  We are going to make sure they hear us NOW!!!!  You I'm only joking about the crying babies.  The longer we can postpone the vote on health care, the better chance we have of stopping the government from taking it over.

If there is anyway for you to drive or fly to DC and be there at 1:00 eastern, please reply to tppyes@gmail.com to let me know.  If you can be there within a 4 - 6 hour drive or a 1 - 2 hour flight, consider making this sacrifice one more time.

Our Founding Fathers pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.  They made it possible for us to make our voices heard with the gift they left to us:  the Constitution.  Many, many of us have sacrificed time out of our lives, our fortunes whether large or small, and are promising our sacred honor to protect the Constitution and our way of government for future generations.  As much as I want to tell these two Congressmen they are crazy to ask us to do this, I realize that Tea Party Patriots has been fighting this issue since May.  If it comes down to this scheduled vote tomorrow night and the health care bill passes the House by 8 or less votes and I had not made this plea to you, I will always wonder "what if?"

We are so close to turning the tide in the House of Representatives. Please join me again tomorrow as we make ourselves heard louder and louder and louder with our voices and instruments and other noise makers.

If you cannot be there (and we truly understand if you cannot), here is what you can do:

  • Call the Congressmen listed below in your state and tell them to vote no.  Tell them a vote yes on this bill will be viewed as betrayal to the Constitution.

  • Forward this email to anyone you know who might be able to drive or fly to DC tomorrow or who will be willing to make phone calls

  • Listen live on Tea Party Patriots Blog Talk Radio

Your Fellow Patriot,

Tea Party Patriots, National Coordinator

P.S. Many of you have expressed concern because the event in DC yesterday turned into a partisan love fest.  Know that yesterday's event was a press conference.  Tea Party Patriots as an organization was not invited to join this press conference specifically.  Tea Party Patriots did not plan the event.  We did not invite ourselves to be on the agenda.

When you the grassroots told us you were going, we made sure to be there to assist you in contacting your Congressmen and navigating the House Office Buildings.

I have a personal, verbal commitment from both Congressman King and Congresswoman Bachmann that it will not be that way tomorrow.  The next few days, our focus must be health care.  We will address partisan politics in the coming weeks after dealing with health care. Be assured this is your movement.  The other National Coordinators and I will do all we can to protect your movement for you.  We will ensure that Tea Party Patriots' agenda stays focused on the core principles that unified us on April 15th, July 4th, July 17th, in August, and on September 12.  The are fiscal responsibility, Constitutionally limited government, and free markets.

JOE LEGAL vs. JOSE ILLEGAL

This says it better than any other E-mail I've had, and convinces me we have to do something to make our Congressmen stop looking the other way..........

 JOE LEGAL vs. JOSE ILLEGAL

You have two families: "Joe Legal" and "Jose Illegal". Both families

have two parents, two children, and live in California .

Joe Legal works in construction, has a Social Security Number and makes

$25.00 per hour with taxes deducted.

Jose Illegal also works in construction, has NO Social Security Number,

and gets paid $15.00 cash "under the table".

Ready? Now pay attention...

Joe Legal: $25.00 per hour x 40 hours = $1000.00 per week, or $52,000.00 per year. Now take 30% away for state and federal tax; Joe Legal now has

$31,231.00.

Jose Illegal: $15.00 per hour x 40 hours = $600.00 per week, or

$31,200.00 per year. Jose Illegal pays no taxes. Jose Illegal now has $31,200.00.

Joe Legal pays medical and dental insurance with limited coverage for his family at $600.00 per month, or $7,200.00 per year. Joe Legal now has $24,031.00.

Jose Illegal has full medical and dental coverage through the state and local clinics at a cost of $0..00 per year. Jose Illegal still has

$31,200.00.

Joe Legal makes too much money and is not eligible for food stamps or welfare. Joe Legal pays $500.00 per month for food, or $6,000.00 per year. Joe Legal now has $18,031.00.

Jose Illegal has no documented income and is eligible for food stamps and welfare. Jose Illegal still has $31,200..00.

Joe Legal pays rent of $1,200.00 per month, or $14,400.00 per year. Joe Legal now has $9,631.00.

Jose Illegal receives a $500.00 per month federal rent subsidy. Jose

Illegal pays out that $500.00 per month, or $6,000.00 per year. Jose Illegal still has $ 31,200.00.

Joe Legal pays $200.00 per month, or $2,400.00 for insurance. Joe Legal now has $7,231.00.

Jose Illegal says, "We don't need no stinkin' insurance!" and still has $31,200.00.

Joe Legal has to make his $7,231.00 stretch to pay utilities, gasoline, etc.

Jose Illegal has to make his $31,200.00 stretch to pay utilities,

gasoline, and what he sends out of the country every month..

Joe Legal now works overtime on Saturdays or gets a part time job after work.

Jose Illegal has nights and weekends off to enjoy with his family.

Joe Legal's and Jose Illegal's children both attend the same school. Joe Legal pays for his children's lunches while Jose Illegal's children get a government sponsored lunch.. Jose Illegal's children have an after school ESL program. Joe Legal's children go home.

Joe Legal and Jose Illegal both enjoy the same police and fire services, but Joe paid for them and Jose did not pay.

DO YOU GET IT, NOW?

Should we vote for or support any politician that supports illegal aliens?  Your call...

It's way PAST time to take a stand for America and Americans!!

IN  GOD WE TRUST

Action Alert for Nov. 5th

ACTION ALERT! ACTION ALERT! ACTION ALERT!

Did you know that the House will vote on a health care bill this week? We have an action plan. Big events are happening all week!

Dear Fellow American Patriots:

Wow! Has this not been one big roller coaster ride???

The bottom line is we are now in the final countdown.

The entire House will vote on a health care bill this week, as early as Thursday afternoon.

For months we have all been working feverishly to make sure that government run health care legislation is not passed. We have done it all:

We’ve yelled.

We’ve called.

We’ve emailed.

We’ve written.

We’ve rallied.

We’ve even marched on the Capitol.

Still our cries and concerns have not been heard.

We have cried tears of despair and shouted in frustration, but still many are not listening.

We know you all are so very tired. We know that each of you work tirelessly each and everyday, trying to do your part, to make a difference. Each of you has done a great job at speaking your hearts.

Some are calling for more angry protests, even storming the Capitol, but let’s not give the media another chance to falsely portray us as an unruly mob.

INSTEAD, LET’S REMIND THEM WHY WE ARE FIGHTING FOR OUR COUNTRY.

Together, with the doctors of Take Back Medicine and the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, the Patriots of Tea Party Patriots Live, Resistnet, and the Tea Party Express, are going to STAND TOGETHER, speak from the heart, and remind Washington we will stand together to protect this country!

On Thursday, November 5th, Representative Michele Bachman (MN) will stand on the steps of the Capitol in Washington, D.C. She will be joined by other Members of Congress and many Patriots from across this country. People will be traveling from coast to coast, to stand shoulder to shoulder with other Patriots in Washington this week.

We know most of you can’t get to Washington again so soon…..

So let’s join Representative Bachman and other Patriots by turning out at State Capitols and Congressional district offices across the country.

Instead of yelling or protesting, let’s sing “God Bless America” at 12:30 pm EST at every location across the country. Let’s send a message that says “WE STAND TOGETHER!”

ACTION STEPS ON THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 5TH:

1. GO TO U.S. CAPITOL at 12 noon EST

If you can make it to D.C., stand up with the other patriots who will be standing with Representative Bachman.

At 12:30, everyone will sing “God Bless America.”

After singing with Patriots from across this country, Patriots will deliver hand written letters to your Representative telling them to VOTE NO on government controlled health care.

2. GO TO DISTRICT CONGRESSIONAL OFFICES at 12 noon EST

At 12:30 pm EST, at the exact same time around the country, in Washington, D.C. and at your local Congressional offices, join together and sing “God Bless America.”

After singing with Patriots from across this country, deliver handwritten letters to the Representatives telling them to VOTE NO on government controlled health care.

3. GO TO STATE CAPITOL at 12 noon EST

At 12:30 pm EST, at the exact same time around the country, in Washington, D.C. and at your local Congressional offices, join together and sing “God Bless America.”

4.Twitter “We Stand Together” and use hashtag #killbill at 12:15pm.

You can update your location and progress throughout the day using Twitter hashtag #killbill. Please send us your videos and pictures. There will be live broadcasting of some events throughout the day. You can broadcast your own event by using Ustream.tv or Next2Friends.com.

5. Call the White House (202.456.1414) at 1:00pm

You can email your Representative here.

Phil Russo and Jason Hoyt from Tea Party Patriots LIVE radio show will be doing interviews and broadcasting video from the steps of the U.S> Capitol during Representative Michele Bachmann's press conference on Thursday, November 5th at 12 noon EST. You can get more information here.
